The University of Idaho College of Law is the law school of the University of Idaho, with its main campus in Moscow and a third-year program in Boise. The College of Law was established in 1909 and is the only law school located in the state of Idaho. It has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1914 and has been accredited by the American Bar Association since 1925. The US News & World Report ranks Idaho in the Third Tier (top 150 out of approximately 200 accredited law schools) in its annual law school rankings.[3]

The College of Law in 2009-10 had an enrollment of around 310 students, with an entering first-year class of roughly 110 students. As a public law school, it had approximately 60 percent of students come from Idaho, and the remaining 40 percent came from over 24 states and foreign countries. Over 70 undergraduate colleges and universities were represented. Minorities comprised 12.1 percent and women comprised 40.1 percent of students.[1]

The College of Law now has a second location in Boise.[4] The Boise third-year program currently accommodates 30 third-year law students,[5] but will eventually grow into a three-year, comprehensive branch of the College of Law in Boise.[6]

Admissions

For the 2009 incoming class, the 25th/75th percentile LSAT range was 152/157 and the GPA range was 3.09/3.64.[7] The College of Law in 2009 had a 47.8% acceptance rate. Approximately 36% received some level of grant-based financial aid from the College.

Bar passage rate & job placement

The Idaho bar examination passage rate was 81.4 percent for first-time takers in 2009. The overall bar passage rate, including states like Washington, Oregon, and Utah, was 77.18%. [8]. About 40% of Idaho graduates have employment commitments at graduation (before taking the bar examination), and 88% are employed within nine months of graduation or pursuing additional graduate degrees (2008 graduating class data). [9] Among those employed, 37% were employed in private practice, 24 percent in judicial clerkships, and 30% percent in government or public interest law. The average starting salary is $51,079. [10] The College of Law was recognized by National Jurist Magazine as one of the top 30 law schools in the country for the percentage of its graduates that entered public interest law after graduation.[11]

Tuition

Fees for Idaho residents were $11,776 per year for the 2009-10 academic year, while non-resident tuition was $21,856. The criteria for determining residency status, and for acquiring residency status, are established by law and are available on the University of Idaho website. Absence from the state to attend a post-secondary school elsewhere does not, by itself, result in loss of residency status. [12]
